In early May, NFL star Justin Jefferson completed his first trip to China. From training with the Chinese national flag football team to sharing his game experience and engaging enthusiastically with fans at “Flag Football Night,” he joined Chinese football enthusiasts in a celebration of the sport. Every touchdown attempt on the field drew thunderous cheers, while each coordinated play showcased the dynamic and rhythmic nature of flag football—fast yet orderly, intense yet disciplined.
Since flag football was officially added to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in 2023, the sport has entered a “fast lane” of development in China, with growing public acceptance and participation.
As a streamlined version of American football, flag football features low barriers to entry, strong protective elements, and a social nature that appeals to young people. It has become a favorite among the youth. No expensive gear is needed—just a pair of cleats, a mouthguard, and a flag belt—making it easy to step onto the field and enjoy the game.

**Accelerating Growth**
Over the next three years, flag football is expected to cover 3,000 schools across the country.
Flag football has been in China for over 20 years, but its growth has long relied on grassroots efforts, mainly driven by amateurs and training institutions. By 2025, the number of participants nationwide had approached 300,000. The Beijing Flag Football Open has been successfully held three times since 2023, with each edition attracting nearly 500 competitors.
