Miami acogió un nuevo GP de F1

The arrival of Liberty Media in MotoGP has kicked off a new chapter for the championship, with the American group aiming to expand the series globally. As part of that vision, adding a second U.S. race alongside the existing round in Austin fits perfectly.

Speculation about MotoGP heading to Miami intensified after Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group (formerly Dorna), attended the recent Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix. Days later, Liberty Media confirmed the possibility. “Miami seems like a logical place,” said Derek Chang, the company’s CEO, in comments reported by *The Race*.

Chang also confirmed that Liberty is in discussions with South Florida Motorsports, the promoter of the F1 Miami race, about a potential future MotoGP event in the city.

“There are many things that need to be sorted out, whether in Miami or at any other circuit, regarding viability for MotoGP—especially safety requirements, which differ from those of Formula 1—as well as which markets make commercial sense. But those are conversations we’ll have with Miami and other parties to determine the right locations for U.S. expansion,” Chang explained.

He clarified that a second U.S. Grand Prix is a long-term project and won’t happen soon, though the American market remains a priority given growing interest in MotoGP. “We’ve already said the U.S. is an important market for MotoGP, so we’re exploring all avenues to grow our business here. It will take time, just like with F1, but we see interest and a market here. Yes, we are interested in adding races in the United States,” Chang stated.

Adding a Miami race aligns with Liberty Media’s broader strategy for the championship. One notable change is moving the Australian Grand Prix from iconic Phillip Island to a street circuit in Adelaide for 2027.

“Our stated goal is to bring some races closer to cities where we can leverage infrastructure, whether airports, long-distance travel, hotels, restaurants, or accessibility for fans from other countries. You can see this in the races we’ve announced for next year in Buenos Aires and Adelaide. We’re already moving in that direction,” Chang said.

Despite exploring new markets, Chang emphasized respect for traditional circuits. “You don’t want a radical overhaul of every race. We have a long tradition of racing in many attractive locations. It makes a lot of sense to keep them. They’ve been fixtures on the calendar and contribute greatly to the sport’s identity.”
